Creating A Garden Haven

Updated: Sep 1, 2019

In my article, Down The Garden Path, we talked about incredible Garden Paths that can be created right in your own backyard. Every garden path needs to end in a focal point, a private space, one that is a haven just for you. We all need a place to escape to where we can be at peace with the world, to clear our minds, to dream, and just be one with nature. That's what a garden haven is. It doesn't have to be a large space, the cozier a haven is, the better. It just needs to be a space that allows your heart to beat slowly and your breathing to be as smooth as glass. You only need a comfortable place to sit, any accessories you choose to include, and nature to surround and uplift you.

In the garden I tend to drop my thoughts here and there. To the flowers I whisper the secrets I keep and the hopes I breathe. I know they are there to eavesdrop for the angels. ~Dodinsky

When you create a haven for yourself, surround yourself with everything you love. First and foremost, comfortable seating ... a table and chairs, a hammock, a daybed? Maybe you are an artist and want a place to paint. Or a musician and want to serenade the birds. One could only hope there would be a glass of wine or at least a cup of tea, and maybe a good book to read. And many beautiful flowers to make the air so sweet it will just carry you away. This is your place. A place to dream.

WHICH HAVEN FEELS MORE COMFORTABLE FOR YOU?

I created a little place at my cottage on a gentle hill where I could look down on the shop I had in a barn. I had a small table and a couple of chairs and an umbrella since it did get some sun from one side. I purchased a plastic box, waterproof, and in that box I kept notebooks, pens, pencils and whatever I needed to sketch and to write. If my mood dropped, I headed straight to my little haven on the hill to write myself out of it. I remember one day watching a spider build a web from high up in a tree, swinging across in front of me to a bush ten feet or more away, and back up to the tree. I was mesmerized! Nature has always been my safe place to be, my dream space.

At the house I have now, I have one of those covered swings, placed strategically in a group of trees. I always tell guests, 'if you want to make the world go away, that's your spot.' That's what you want your haven to be, just you and nature and total peace. It's easy to create your personal haven. All you have to do is dream what you want your sanctuary to be, and create your dream.

Enjoy!
